McLeod Summer Playhouse
Southern Illinois’ Professional Summer Theater
McLeod Summer Playhouse (MSP) is the professional arm of the SIU Department of Theater. Presented in the summer months, MSP offers a season of professionally mounted productions through June and July, featuring a company of young professional performers gathered from auditions across the United States. The season concludes with the All Southern High School Theatre Project, an opportunity for area high school students to work with professional staff, jointly produced with Carbondale Community Arts.
Bubbly, joyful, and exhilarating “Hairspray,” the big heart, big hair musical dances onto the McLeod Summer Playhouse stage weekends July 10-19. This “fab-mod” musical, with great 1960s-style music, tells the story of plus-sized teenager Tracy Turnblad who dances her way onto a local teen television show and breaks down its segregation policies.

James and the Giant Peach
This year’s Theater for Young Audience production of “James and the Giant Peach" tells the story of an orphaned boy, sent to live with his two mean aunts, who escapes with the help of insect friends and a really big magical peach. Together they roll through the countryside, sail through great dangers and arrive in New York City where they set up residence in the pit of the peach in Central Park. The book written by Dahl in 1961 was made into a Disney stop-motion animated feature in 1996. Dahl is well-known for his magical and adventurous children’s stories, which include “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Matilda.”
